THE FORMULARY SYSTEM:

3.2 NON-FORMULARY DRUGS

Non-Formulary drugs are medications that have not been formally assessed by the BCHA Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Medications in this category may be reviewed in the future.

 POLICY

The pharmacy will obtain a non-formulary drug for a specific patient if, after consultation with the physician, it is determined that suitable formulary alternative is not available.

 PROCEDURES

Physician:    1.  Contacts pharmacist to inform of the non-formulary drug requirement.

                    2. Writes the order in the chart.

Pharmacy:    3. Informs physician and nurse of expected time of delivery.  This may
take several days as it is dependent upon location of supplier and time
and day of the order.
