Treatment
of Hypomagnesemia:
Parenteral
(Magnesium Sulphate)
Mild
deficiency:
1-2g
(8-16mEq, 4-8mMol) IV, IM every 6-12 hours as necessary for repletion. If IV,
dilute 1-2 g in 50-100mL NS or D5W and administer over 30-60 minutes.
Severe
deficiency:
5-6g
magnesium sulphate (40-48mEq, 20-24mMol) in 50-250mL NS or D5W IV over 3-4
hours. Repeat every 12-24 hours x 3-4 doses until serum magnesium levels have
returned to normal.
