MAGNESIUM PRODUCTS AND DOSING

Treatment of Hypomagnesemia:

Parenteral (Magnesium Sulphate)

Mild-Mod deficiency:         5g (40mEq, 20mMol) in 50-250mL NS or D5W IV over 3-4
(0.5-0.69 mMol/L)                 hours, repeated daily x 1-3 doses.* 

Severe deficiency:               5g (40mEq, 20mMol) in 50-250mL NS or D5W IV over 3-4
(< 0.5 mMol/L)                      hours.  Repeat Q12-24H x 3-4 doses.*

 Renal Insufficiency:           5g (40 mEq, 20mMol) in 50-250mL NS or D5W IV over 3-4 hours x 1 dose. Recheck serum magnesium level.*

* Can monitor serum magnesium level 4-6 hours after end of last dose in a series

 Oral Replacement

 Mild deficiency:                 25-35mEq Mg++/day
                                               Magnesium RougierŪ - 60-90cc/day in 3-4 divided doses
                                               Magnesium complex - 300-400mg/day in 2-3 divided doses
