   TARGET GOALS FOR CHOLESTEROL LOWERING

Level of Risk

Initiate Treatment if:

Target LDL (mmol/L)

High

(CAD, PVD, atherosclerosis, or  diabetes

FRS 10yr risk of CV disease: ³ 20%

Consider treatment in all patients

< 2.0  OR

³ 50% ¯ baseline LDL

Moderate

FRS 10yr risk:  10-19%

LDL > 3.5 mmol/L OR
TC/HDL > 5.0
OR
hs-CRP > 2  mg/L
(test in men > 50 yrs,
women > 60 yrs if LDL < 3.5)

< 2.0  OR

³ 50% ¯ baseline LDL

Low

FRS 10yr risk: < 10%

LDL ³ 5.0 mmol/L

³ 50% ¯ baseline LDL

  CAD=coronary artery disease; PVD = peripheral vascular disease;
  CV = cardiovascular;
  FRS = Framingham Risk Score; TC = Total cholesterol
